Technology: Get Found Online with Free Blog Tools – Part II

December 11, 2008

I hope you’ve already added enhancements to your blog from the previous post (Part I) and improved your chances of getting found online. Here are a few more things to implement.

Create a sitemap. A sitemap organizes the information on your Website or blog and puts all the data a search engine needs in one place. It doesn’t boost your rankings but it makes it easier for search engines to index your site (which improves rankings). Try this free online sitemap generator.

Register it in all the right places. There are many ways to promote your blog. Two include listing it with Technorati.com (an Internet search engine for blogs) and BlogCatalog.com (a social blog directory where thousands of blog sites are searched, rated, and reviewed).

Create a mobile version. Mofuse is a plug-in that detects when someone is coming to your blog or Website from a handheld device and will offer up a mobile version of it.

If you have ideas to share, please leave a comment.

A way that I have found to PERSONALLY get found online is to create a personal portfolio. I used a new company called PersonaVita. It was easy and I can create as many profiles that I want, each having their own URL. I have some with work experience that has been validated by my peers and others that just have personal info. It was been great in my job search to give this info to potential employers.

Georgia, thank you for your comment. I’m glad this is working for you in your job search. However, for small business owners, I’d rather see them host their own content on their Website, blog, etc.

Instead of them paying the $9 a month to the Website you recommend, they could invest that money into a Web hosting account and host up to 20 sites for that one price (some hosting packages will allow you to do more). With that, their marketing would focus on driving traffic to THEIR Website instead of someone else’s. (I checked the traffic to the Website you recommend, and it’s not that great).
